The lecture was delivered during the inauguration ceremony of the new Executive of the Association of Accounting Students – IAMTECH (AAS- IAMTECH) headed by Vincent Jabbie Momoh for 2013/2014 academic year.
In his lecture, the Accountant General laid emphasis on the integrity of the public service and its role in the development of any nation, noting that before one talks about transparency one should think of accountability which leads to development.
He told his audience that as accounting students they should first of all like and be ready to preserve the ethics of the accounting profession, saying that their profession was not like other professions all over the world.
The AG highlighted some of the values he had always tried to maintain in his department to ensure that no body attempts to distract him from what he stands for including politicians who sometimes visit his office for clarifications or asking him to increase funding, etc. “Thus, forgetting that I am only disbursing government funds and not really responsible for any of it preparation”.
He encouraged students, among many other things, to concentrate on their studies devoid of politics as the only way to achieve their goals in life, noting that if they have the required qualification, “there is no door you can knock that will not open to you”.
The AG also urged them to go side by side with information technology as one cannot occupy any serious office or participated in other areas without being technologically literate, adding that getting academic qualification is one but should also try to have practical experience to be able to fit into the society.
On her part, the Principal of IAMTECH, Madam Abie P. Kamara expressed her delight over the institution’s achievement over the years and as one of the those taking the lead at the moment with her graduates in most offices nationwide, including banks.
She said her institution has made tremendous progress in the academic arena of the country, having won the Best Academic Institution of the Year in 2012 awarded by the All Works of Life (AWOL).
She called on students to continue to make the institution proud while encouraging parents to send their children to IAMTECH.
Madam Kamara explained that the institution was not only catered for students to have qualifications but those with training experience to contribute to society’s growth and development.
“Apart from all our efforts, government is yet to consider our students with the necessary supports including Grant-in-Aid like other institutions,” she lamented, saying her institution is was operating on private bases but contributes greatly in the drop-out rate in the country.
