State of the World Midwifery Report 2014 unveiled
A one day validation workshop for the State of the World Midwifery Report 2014 was revealed on 27th January, 2014 at the Presidential Lounge of the National Stadium in Freetown in the presence of Midwives, Senior Nurses, civil society and the media.
In her welcome address, the Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs. Hossinatu Kanu maintained that the validation exercise is another milestone in the history of Midwifery.
She explained that the process started in December 2013 with support from UNFPA, UNICEF, WHO among others.
She pointed out that the validation workshop was geared towards showing the progress made in 2013 State of Midwifery and to strengthen maternal and child health care.
In her deliberation, Dr. Joan Shepherd described the process as an opportunity because it guides the Sierra Leone Midwifery Association to know where they are and what they have to do and supplement Midwives who are deployed in areas of need.
She stated that in terms of regulation the country has made progress more than some French countries which she said have no regulatory systems.
In the area of competency among Midwives, she said Sierra Leone has gone a broad way adding that there are certain things in the report that they are very proud of.
She however observed that even though they have made success there are still gaps which they have to fill.
She noted that the recent report for the births and deaths was not good for the new born and reminded her colleagues that more needs to be done to safe lives of the new born children.
In her statement, the President of the West Africa College of Nursing, Mrs. Amelia Garber said the West Africa College of Nursing is one of the constituent colleges which comprises English speaking countries such as Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Gambia, Ghana, and Liberia and one Francophone country, Benin.
She stated that the world has placed high value in the critical role that Midwives play in health service delivery.
Delivering the keynote address, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Sarian Kamara, stated that the report provides information on the status of Midwifery in Sierra Leone.
She also stated that the survey is undertaken in seventy five countries in Africa and Asia.
She maintained that the focus of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation for 2014 is the provision of quality delivery services which she noted was why they now have two Midwifery schools in the country to help in the training of Midwives so that they can give quality service in maternal and infant care.
