St John the Evangelist Church, Wellington celebrates 145th anniversary

Sunday 10 November 2013, was Remembrance Sunday for the dead, and also the 145th patronal celebration at St John the Evangelist Church, Wellington.

It turned out to be a Sunday to remember as worshippers of the church, Wellingtonians generally and friends and well wishers teemed the church and got hairs rising with hilarious singing and high church worship not common in our orthodox churches these days.

The high point of the service was the laying of wreaths to remember the dead at a mock tomb constructed at the right front entrance to the church.

A total of seventy-five families of the church had registered to participate in the Remembrance Day service and representatives from each family laid wreaths on the mock tomb in honor of their deceased.  The laying of wreaths ceremony was climaxed with the sounding of the last post.  The tombstone was unveiled and dedicated by the Vicar of the church, Rev. Llewellyn Allen, Representatives from each family were also made to carry lighted candles as prayers were offered for the repose of the souls of the departed.

The preacher at the service was Rev. Franklyn Brown, Vicar, St. Thomas Church Grafton and Kosso Town.  He quoted several passages from the Holy Bible cautioning mankind to endeavor to do good deeds for which they will be remembered even after their death.  He referred to the last supper as a memorial meal for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and told the congregation that they must always partake of the holy sacrament worthily in order to forestall sickness and damnation.  It is only when we are righteous and just that our names will be remembered, he cautioned.

A special Remembrance Sunday Committee had worked tirelessly for the past couple of months to make the ceremony a resounding success.
