UNIPSIL might cease operations in December
A reliable source at the United Nations Peace Building Mission in Siera Leone (UNIPSIL) has revealed that the Mission might wrap up its operations in the country by December this year.
The source also explained that the worry now on the minds of local staff members of the Mission is whether they will be relocated to other United Nations Agencies in the country, or just be laid off.
The source also stated that it has been learned that the Mission intended to relocate the expatriate staff to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) without any consideration for the local staff.
A local staff member of the Mission who spoke to this reporter expressed delight at the respectable manner in which the Mission had been treating them after a strike action they undertook against some burning issues like low salaries and allowances early this year.
He said they were however very worried with the news that the Mission may fold up by the end of the year leaving them jobless.
He said they were calling on the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary General, Mr. Jens Toyberg Frendzen to ensure that the Sierra Leonean staff of the Mission are employed by other United Nations Agencies in the country.
Ordinary citizens this Reporter interviewed on the issue expressed appreciation to the United Nations Organisation for their immense contribution in bringing peace to this country.
They suggested that as a sign of appreciation of their work in this country, the Government should dedicate a day in the year in observance of the presence of the United Nations in this country .
