Bo, November 6 (SLENA) – The Vice Principal of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Senior Secondary School in Bo, Mrs. Isatu Turay has emphasized the importance of science in the industrial and technological development of the modern world.

Giving a keynote address during a one-day workshop of science teachers, at the school’s library last weekend, Mrs. Turay called on the twenty participants to take it as their sacred and traditional duty to improve in their pupils the various  science disciplines as this constitute one of the nerve centres for their successes in the world of technology.

On his part, the Principal of the school, Mr. Ishmael Nallo highlighted the problems associated with the teaching of science which include, among others, inadequate teaching and learning resources, science apparatus and chemical agents for practical purposes.

Negative attitude of teachers and pupils towards science subjects accounts for the poor performance, the principal reiterated, noting that most people believe science subjects are for special category of pupils including the most intelligent ones.

The programme coordinator, Mr. Yayah Kamara who is also head of the science department of that school, recalled that two and half decades ago the school was among the excellent science institutions in the country and the West African sub-region.

“The downward trend in pupils’ overall performance in science subjects requires both teachers and pupils to set themselves goals of reversing the appalling trend,” Mr. Kamara stressed.
