After 5-days intensive session MEST concludes Science and Technology Workshop
It is no secret that there has been poor performance and less attention paid to science at WASSCE level such that over the years this state of affairs had deprived many Sierra Leoneans of the skills or qualification required in our manufacturing industries and medical delivery system.
The five days training workshop with a total of 60 participants drawn from various secondary schools in the Western Area started on Monday 20th and ended on Friday the 24th May 2013 at the NCTVA Conference Hall at Tower Hill in Freetown on the theme “Demystify Science by coming face to face with Science”.
In a bid to promote science and technology in the country, the Director of Higher Education Science and technology, Nebieu Mohamed Kamara said that the week-long training workshop served as a refresher course for science teachers aimed at enhancing their knowledge in order to enable students perform efficiently and effectively in those subjects.
Mr. Nabieu noted that the training was a way of capacitating science teachers to improve their skills coupled with their vast experience in the teaching field. He encouraged science students to focus their attention on science subjects as they are the future leaders, adding that strategies have been put in place to overcome the huddles in the teaching of science.
He further disclosed that there will also be an exhibition to be displayed by some selected secondary schools on a competitive basis for which prizes will be awarded. He said the following schools were selected: Freetown Secondary School for Girls (FSSG), Prince of Wales (POW), Sierra Leone Muslim Congress Secondary School and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School.
He said that at the end of the competition, Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School emerged as the winner and bagged the sum of over Le 700,000 while the second prize winner, Sierra Leone Congress Boys received the sum of Le500,000 and the third prize winner was the Freetown Secondary School for Girls(FSSG) with the sum of Le300,000.
While distributing the prizes, the Deputy Director of Higher Education Science and Technology, Senesie Mustapha Kuyateh said that science and technology are very significant areas that pupils need to pay greater attention to ensure that they become successful people in society.
Mr. Kuyateh said participants will also be awarded certificates as the training was very important in promoting high quality in science and technology.
