Hon. Abdul Salam Kanu gives scholarships to 40 children

The Member of Parliament for Constituency 101 in the east of Freetown, Hon. Abdul Salam Kanu, has on Sunday, October 3 this year awarded a total of 40 scholarships to the less privileged primary and secondary school children in his Constituency.

Giving his keynote address during the awards ceremony at the Marie Vandy Community Primary and Secondary School at Shell New Road in Kissy, Hon. Kanu revealed that this was not the first time he was giving scholarships to the less privileged children of his Constituency, but rather it was the second phase of what he referred to as the Hon. Salam Scholarship Scheme.

He explained that he had awarded over one hundred scholarships for this academic year alone and that he and Councilor Morlai Bangura of Ward 361 are working to increase the number for the next academic year.

He pointed out that this was only the beginning of his scholarship scheme which he said he hoped to continue as an annual exercise.

When asked as to whether the selection of the beneficiaries was properly or transparently done, he replied that there was a special committee that was charged with the responsibility of identifying vulnerable and less privileged children in the Constituency and that it was done transparently by the committee.

He implored all parents to send their children to school as he said education is the key to the development of any nation.

In his comments, Councilor Morlai Bangura reiterated their commitment towards the education of the children as he said they are giving these scholarships to see that the children become the leaders of tomorrow, maintaining that they can only be the leaders of tomorrow when they are educated.

Giving the vote of thanks was Mrs. Zainab Squire who thanked the Hon. Kanu and Councilor Bangura on behalf of the parents.
