Explaining the purpose of the meeting, District Coordinator ACC, Mr. Abdulai Saccoh underscored that corruption continues to undermine the development strides of Sierra Leone, disclosing that there are unpatriotic individuals who are bent on destroying the country by siphoning its much needed revenue. Mr. Saccoh revealed that the outreach was meant to recruit the people of Mayepoh in the Anti-Corruption force equipping them knowledge-wise to resist and report suspected acts of corruption to the ACC. The District Coordinator emphasized that the damaging effects of corruption were eclectic and as such all Sierra Leoneans must put hands on deck with the Commission to stem the tide of graft in the country. Mr. Saccoh lamented on the corruption that is pervasive at local level in the Education, Free Health Care and Local Courts. He assured listeners of ACC’s uncompromising determination to destroy the pandemic.
Speaking on corruption crimes and the degree of partnership, the ACC Regional Manager North Mr. Patrick Sandi opined that the fight against corruption was a herculean task requiring so much zeal, courage and resources. Manager Sandi reiterated that the greater proportions of those who revel in corruption are very powerful economically, which makes the battle daunting the more. Mr. Sandi stressed that the ACC law 2008 was precise in dealing with corruption matters, noting that when you are found guilty of any corruption offences you pay a fine of not less than Thirty Million Leones (Le30,000,000) or imprisonment of not less than three (3) years or suffer the two.
The ACC Manager North highlighted key offences such as misappropriation of public/donor funds and property, conspiracy to commit a corruption offence, abuse of office/position, offering, soliciting and receiving advantage and receiving gifts for corrupt purpose. ACC Manager implored the people of Mayepoh to be strong in challenging corrupt people who believe they can do sub-standard projects in the villages and get away with them.
“The development of Mayepoh is squarely in the hands of the Mayepoh people and so, you must take responsibility in making sure that the community is corrupt free”, Manager Sandi re-echoed.
Earlier, the ceremonial chief Pa Roke Koroma expressed great delight for the Commission’s move to educate the people and commended ACC for the tremendous work done amidst the challenges. Pa Roke assured ACC of his people’s support and commitment to the crusade.
Questions and answers session formed the high point of the outreach meeting.
