ACC targets Rosengbeh community in the fight against corruption

In a bid to ensuring that the fight against graft reaches the four walls of the country, the Anti-Corruption Commission Northern Regional Office has on Tuesday 29th October, 2013 held community sensitization meeting with the people of Rosengbeh, in the Mange Bana Section, Tane Chiefdom, Tonkolili District.

Welcoming ACC to the town, the Headman Pa Abdulai Y. Koroma expressed great appreciation for the education, as the community people had longed for this opportunity.  Pa Koroma revealed that they had imagined the Commission to be limited only in the big cities, but were gratified to see the ACC at their doorsteps enlightening them on the evils of corruption and how Sierra Leoneans must unite to defeat the scourge.

Advancing the rationale for the outreach, ACC’s District Coordinator Tonkolili Mr. Abdulai Saccoh opined that ACC remains very strategic in the development process of the country.  Mr. Saccoh furthered that the meeting was to increase the people’s knowledge on the work of the ACC and enlist them in the anti-graft campaign.  The Coordinator Tonkolili lamented that people in remote villages stand the greatest risk of suffering from corruption and corrupt practices, cause corrupt people look down upon them.  Mr. Saccoh urged the people to stand against such people for the development of their communities.  The Coordinator ACC assured all present of the Commission’s unshakable resolve to eliminating corruption in the country.

Elucidating on the corruption offences, penalties and the mode of collaboration, the ACC Regional Manager North Mr. Patrick Sandi told listeners that the Commission was vigorously pursuing the mandate given to her to prevent, suppress and eradicate corruption in the country.  Mr. Sandi emphasized that the penalty for committing a corruption offence was a fine of not less than Thirty Million Leones (Le 30,000,000) or imprisonment for not less than three (3) years or suffer both; highlighting offences such as soliciting and accepting bribes, misappropriation of public/donor funds and property and receiving gift for a corrupt purpose.

The ACC Regional boss North, reiterated that public support was pivotal to winning the fight and as such urged fellow compatriots to resist report and rebuff corruption in all its form.  Manager Sandi stressed that contractors have the tendency to abandon projects in such communities believing that people will hardly monitor them, but assured the people that ACC will traverse the country to spread anti-corruption messages.

Manager Sandi implored the people of Rosengbeh to be vigilant and alert in dealing with issues of graft in their localities.

Speaker to speaker disclosed to the Commission the many incomplete projects implemented by Non-Governmental Organizations in their section, and called for swift intervention.

Questions and answers climaxed the engagement.
