NMJD report exposes land deals by foreign investors

The Network Movement for Justice and Development [NMJD] in their recent report have provided evidence that they have given support to communities to become more capacitated and able to resist dubious and unfair land deals by foreign investors in grabbing large acreages of land in the rural communities.

The reports noted that it is hoped that the communities will use the evidence to put pressure on their leaders and other stakeholders so that they can enter into fairer pro-poor land deals with foreign investors.

The report also stated that the most important aspect on the thirteen points noted the lack of transparency which is very little or no information is available to the public about land deals negotiated or still under negotiations, stressing that it was therefore very difficult to ascertain the right amount of hectares that have been leased to foreign investors.

The report observed that most deals received no publicity at all and the public only gets to know about them when there is community resistance or displeasure about dispossession or eviction, loss of livelihoods, no environmental safe guards, external interests at work, children loosing out their own education, local elite are becoming more powerful, increasing in social problems and loosing cultural heritage.
