Sierra Rutile awards sixteen scholarships to children of employees

Sierra Rutile last week awarded sixteen academic scholarships, worth a total of Le 8,000,000(eight million Leones), to the children of their employees as part of this year’s Sierra Rutile Scholarship Scheme, with nine of the scholarships going to girls.

The Sierra Rutile Annual Scholarship Scheme was set up four years ago to support the education of academically gifted children of Sierra Rutile’s staff.   It provides financial help for children who are in the top five of their class and whose parents are full-time employees of Sierra Rutile, below supervisory level.  Primary and Secondary school children are both eligible.

Sierra Rutile’s Environment, health and Safety Manager, Mr. Ansumana Jabati, congratulated the children and their parents on their success, saying that Sierra Rutile was pleased to be able to support the pupils with this initiative.

“The intellect of our country’s children is a primary resource and nurturing it is a focus of Sierra Rutile. The Sierra Rutile Scholarship Scheme recognises academic potentials and brings them to light.  On behalf of Sierra Rutile’s management, I can say that the company is truly delighted to be able to contribute today to the future of these exceptionally talented young people,” he noted.

He added that the company was especially pleased to see so many girls among the scholarship recipients.  “It is said that when we educate a boy, we educate one person but that when we educate a girl, we educate a family, and a whole nation,” he observed.

He noted that the Agenda for prosperity has highlighted the power of education for women and girls, quoting research which shows that if all girls in Africa were to attain secondary education, 1.8 million lives would be saved annually, and girls’ earning capacity would increase by 10-20% with every extra year of education.  He also stated that a recent report from the United Nations Educational Social Cultural Organisation (UNESCA) also found that if all women had a primary education, child marriages and child mortality could fall by a sixth and maternal deaths by two-thirds.

Speaking on behalf of the proud parents was Mr. Idrissa Talloi who thanked Sierra Rutile for its commitment to education, and to its employees.

“We are grateful for Sierra Rutile’s willingness to invest in the future of our children. Nothing is more important to the progress of Sierra Leone than the education of the next generation because it has the power to make lives and communities better and we are proud to watch our children as they begin to contribute to a better Sierra Leone,“ he stated.
