Terrible conditions at FBC in Sierra Leone
One of the highest places of learning within the West Africa sub-region and Sierra Leone in particular, the Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, is currently in a deplorable condition especially in the areas of electricity and water supply for the past five months.
Reports reaching this paper say lecturers, students, administrative and support staffs are finding it very difficult to cope with these poor conditions.
They also revealed that prior to this bizarre situation electricity power and pure drinking water were in abundance until recently when the contractors charged with the responsibility of constructing the road along the Fourah Bay College to Grafton route reportedly destroyed the pipes and electricity cables.
Since then, the reports continue, no work has been done to rehabilitate those pipes and electric cables rendering the entire college dry and in to a state of constant blackout.
This ugly situation has seriously affected lecturers who are currently marking examination papers mostly at night, forcing most of them to buy small generators to generate light for them.
Some of the affected lecturers who spoke to this paper said they are spending their own money to buy generators and fuel them. They stressed that now that they have to spend their own money in order to serve their students and coupled with the economic hardship in the country they are now finding it very almost impossible to properly take care of their families.
They concluded by appealing to the Government to urgently look into their plight and put corrective measures in place to restore sanity to the college.

What should be understood is that institutions of learning and for that matter any vital functionary institution should not be politicised. If they are independent free thinkers it makes it easier for politicians to fear and respect them but , when you have sold your soul on the alter of political gerrymandering you run the risk to be treated not with reverence but with a rather light weight irritant. Over the years this nation allowed its institutions to be politicised and compromised it has served us less, because after all that is where the knowledge and ideas should be coming from and successive Governments have being poorly served because of the way the institutions sold their souls and the nation hence suferred. If you want respect have principles then you will get honour and regard from Kings and men. Seeth a man deligent in his business he shall stand before kings and not before mean men. Serve your cause uphold dignity, our institutions are sacred.
