Trade Minister frowns on high alcohol volume
The Minister of Trade and Industry, Alhaji Usman Boie Kamara, yesterday engaged alcohol producing companies at the Ministry’s conference hall at Youyi Building, Freetown.
Addressing the gathering, he observed that surveys have revealed that the alcohol volume of their products were very high.
He also stated that they are also engaged in selling their products to children under the age of 18.
The soft-spoken Minister affirmed that even imported alcohol will be monitored as they would work in conjunction with the Standards Bureau to check that the alcoholic volume of imported alcohol complies with the accepted percentage.
The Minister stressed that there should be fixed percentages of alcohol volume for human consumption in order that it will not destroy the nation’s youth population.
He maintained that even palm wine sellers will be monitored to ensure that they do not add harmful additives in their products.
He allayed their fears that his Ministry had no intention to take undue advantage against them, but that the Ministry would ensure that they do the right thing.
