Senegal’s President sacks Prime Minister and entire Cabinet
The President of the West African State of Senegal Macky Sall over the weekend relieved his Prime Minister Abdoul Mbaye of his duties and dissolved the entire cabinet after 18 months in office and was replaced in less than six hours, by former Justice Minister Ms. Aminata Toure, aged 51.
A spokesman for the President Aboul Abel Thiam said over state radio that the move was “to ensure greater efficiency in government“. Ms. Aminata Toure is currently consulting with the stakeholders for the setting up of a new cabinet latest by the end of this week.
Outgoing Premier Mr. Mbaye is a professional banker who led the President Sall’s first government following his election in April 2012 while Ms Aminata Toure controlled the Justice Ministry portfolio.
Meanwhile, the local media has proffered several reasons for the sacking of Mr. Mbaye including his slowness in implementing government programs as well as his connection to the ill-gotten wealth siphoned into Senegal by the former Chadian dictator, Hissene Habré.
As of now the political situation in the country is reported to be calm and quiet. Nothing else is being privately or secretly discussed other than this issue. As events if any unfold will be reported accordingly.
