Airtel’s Ericsson trains sixty workers

Ericsson in partnership with Airtel, the National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM), and the Ministry of Information and Communications, Tuesday, hosted an ICT workshop for 60 industry stakeholders including service providers, government officials, regulators and the media in Sierra Leone at the Shangri La, Lumley Beach in Freetown.

In his comments, Mr. Jonathan Kahn of Ericsson Kenya said the workshop aimed at improving the network society and its impact on the lives of Sierra Leoneans.

He explained that they wanted to open up new connectivity to empower people and open up more education on ICT.  He also revealed that in 2009, mobile telecommunications connected 5 billion people and that they have predicted that they will connect 50 billion devices by 2020.

He also disclosed that they have supplied network equipment to Celtel, then Zain. and now Airtel since 1999.

“We have also supplied the 2G mobile network equipment delivery of 3G-HSPA mobile broadband network and established a branch office in Sierra Leone in November 2011,” he further revealed.

In his statement, the Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, Hon. Theo Nicol, said Ericsson informed them about this training one month ago.  He paid tribute to Airtel who he said have worked very hard to make the training a success.

He stressed that the government believes strongly in communications, noting that the training was extremely important because the ICT is perhaps the highest paid in the civil service.

He pleaded with Ericsson for this session to be a yearly programme, maintaining that by 2015, Sierra Leone must move from analogue to digital.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of Airtel Sierra Leone, Mr. RVS Bhullah, stated that the programme aimed to deepen the understanding of the participants while championing the roll out and application of communications infrastructure to support sustainable economic and societal development.

He explained that one notable development of their operations is the introduction of the mobile broadband with Internet connectivity of up to 3.75 gigabytes in all major towns and cities in the country, with mining and other companies in the remote areas now relying on their Internet services.
