Minister to launch SLRTA FreeToll Line
The Minister of Transport and Aviation, Leonard Balogun Koroma will on 23rd July, 2013 launch the Free Toll Line for the Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority (SLRTA) at its headquarters, Kissy Road in Freetown.
SLRTA’s Public Relations Officer, Abdul Karim Dumbuya, yesterday disclosed to this medium that the Toll Free Line would be provided by Airtel, one of the leading mobile phone operators in the country to enhance the pillar of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety which is Crash Response.
He continued that Information Communication Technology (ICT) plays a pivotal role to enhance road safety enlightening that SLRTA is the institution that regulates road safety in collaboration with the Health Ministry for emergency services among other line Ministries and institutions.
According to the PRO, “the Free Toll Line is to promote road safety as hundreds of people have lost their lives through accidents by reckless and the impatience of road users, especially drivers and riders.”
He further stated that the Free Toll Line would be manned 24-hours by SLRTA management to respond to stress calls on road accidents among other related issues relating to the dangerous use of roads like stationary vehicles that results to accidents.
Abdul Dumbuya further admonished the public to utilize the facility judiciously and corporate with SLRTA to reduce road accidents which is the concern of all, especially during the rainy season and appealed to vehicle owners and drivers not to abandon derelict vehicles on the roads at the detriment of other people.
He admonished vehicle owners and drivers that when their vehicles breakdown, they must push and park them on the side of the road to avoid obstructing traffic that may lead to an accident.
