FFALD Condemns Discrimination
The recent shooting of a deportee from the United States of America by the Sierra Leone Police has sparked concerns from civil society organizations in the country and one such organization is the newly formed Foundation for Advocacy and Literacy Development (FFALD) which, in reaction to the ugly shooting, has issued a press release calling for an independent investigation committee to look into the issue as it strongly condemns the act of discrimination and stigmatization against deportees seeking solace in the country.
Country Director of FFALD, Donald Thompson, in an interview, noted that they are strongly committed to advocating for and protecting the lives of the voiceless people in Sierra Leone and also advice members of the general public to stop discrimination and stigmatization against deportees because they need support and encouragement to re-integrate into society.
FFALD also condemned unlawful possession of guns or inappropriate use of weapons in the country and it further stated that the police need to be more pro active in terms of handling such occurrence, noting that section 15 (a) of the 1991 Constitution and article 6 (1) of the International Convention on Civic and Political Rights strongly guarantees the right to life. As investigation continues into the untimely demise of the deportee, FFALD is also expressing the need for Civil Society intervention.
