New man in charge… Johnny McKinstry
FIFA ranking ahead of Tunisia clash Sierra Leone down three places
Ahead of Sierra Leone World Cup qualifier with Tunisia this Saturday, Sierra Leone moves down three places to 70th in the World of the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola ranking for the month of June.
However, they remain 14th place in the African continent for two months running while Saturday’s North African counterpart is also down one place to 6th behind Ivory Coast, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria and Algeria respectively.
Many will see it as still a progress considering Sierra Leone is still ahead of some great African soccer powers, the likes of Egypt, Morocco Togo, Angola, to name a few.
Meanwhile, at just 27, this week Johnny McKinstry (in photo) will lead Sierra Leone out in their quest for World Cup qualification, despite him having never played or coached football at a professional level before.
Johnny’s appointment came as a surprise to many soccer pundits in April but made headlines around the world.
McKinstry who replaced Swedish born Lars-Olof Mattsson explained: “I have been coaching in Sierra Leone for just over three years now, working as Academy Manager for the Craig Bellamy Foundation where I am responsible for the identification and development of the country’s best young players.
Having followed the progress of the national team closely over the last three years, I was well placed to take the job on.”
McKinstry will be hoping to pull up a great result this Saturday, before travelling to the Cape Verde a week later.
