Sierra Leone Imams excel in Kuwait
The final batch of Imams, including the two who were recently left behind, will depart today via Air Moroc to the Islamic State of Kuwait, to pursue a three month intensive Imamship course.
The two, according to the National Secretary General of the United Council of Imams in Sierra Leone Alhaji Mohamed Sheriff Conte, are Sheikh Musa Kutubu from Koinadugu district and Sheikh Umar Thaim Sesay from Kambia.
He said already 18 Imams from different parts of the country had departed two weeks ago to Kuwait.
The Secretary General revealed that the first batch of the Imams comprised of 16 chief Imams and they had successfully returned home after completing a three month intensive course at the Islamic Cultural Centre in the State of Kuwait.
He said this gesture to the United Council of Imams in Sierra Leone was as a result of the leadership of the council Alhaji Yaya Deen Kamara who collaborated with officials of the Sierra Leone Embassy in Kuwait for training assistance to the council.
He disclosed that prior to their arrival in Kuwait, a two man delegation from the Islamic Cultural Centre in Kuwait were in Freetown in January this year to organise a two day seminar for the Imams and requested for 36 Imams to further pursue Islamic courses in Kuwait
One of the graduates, Sheikh Salieu Kanu of Masjid Amin (Mosque), Congo Water, told this medium that the course was very interesting as it covered various topics relating to leadership.
He said Sierra Leonean Imams bagged awards as a result of the brilliant performances they put on during the course.
Sheikh Sallieu Kanu said besides Sierra Leone, other countries including Turkey, Ethiopia, Canada and Russia also participated in the course.
He said Sierra Leone came in second position in the football tournament while Turkey won the championship.
He thanked Sierra Leone Ambassador to Kuwait H.E. Ibrahim Orsoya Kamara and his embassy staff for the warm hospitality accorded them during their stay in Kuwait.
