World Labour Day Today… Labour Ministry’s Challenges
Today marks the worldwide celebration of World Labour Day. Sierra Leone has today joined other nations in the world over to celebrate this historic day which springs from the endless struggle of workers for social and economic rights since the 19th century when workers had no maternity leave, no safety wear, little or no compensation for death and injury, very long hours of service, and other appalling working conditions of service.
Sierra Leone’s Commissioner of Labour, Ahmed Musa has, in an interview, told this medium that the Ministry of Labour has developed a framework which will serve as a blueprint to respond to labour cries so as to revamp labour issues. He admitted that the ministry is facing a series of labour challenges and expressed tremendous recognition for the roles played by the United Nations and its agency, the International Labour Organization, ILO, and the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper with whose help, he said, the ministry is now reviewing the antiquated labour laws as a way of battling the existing labour challenges in the country.
The Labour Commissioner informed that the Labour Ministry is poised to re-activate job centres which will provide an employment data base for the provision of jobs for especially the youth..
In his conclusion he held that the Ministry in the last two years has enjoyed social partnership in resolving many industrial disputes, noting that it will continue its fight to promote harmony in the industrial world.
