For Appointment of New Coach…Fans Blast Sports Minister in Sierra Leone
Supporters of the national team, Leone Stars, have severely criticized the Minister of Sports, Hon. Mohamed Abubakarr Paul Kamara, for the appointment of Irish born Johnny McKinstry (in photo) as head coach of the national team.
According to the minister, McKinstry will be in charge of Leone Stars’ three remaining world cup matches in Tunisia, Equitorial Guinea and Cape Verde. The ministry, he said, appointed the Irish born coach in consultation with the FA and it is left with the coach to prove his mettle, which will determine whether he will be sacked or his contract extended.
Johnny McKinstry’s appointment came after the resignation of Lars Olof Mattsson who said he resigned because the Sports Minister, Paul Kamara, was interfering in his job. The appointment of a new coach has not gone down well with fans who argue that McKinstry has no experience with the national team, saying they were expecting the appointment of a local coach. They accused the minister of being unpatriotic and lavishing taxpayers money on hiring a foreign coach when Leone Stars have no chance to qualify, further accusing the minister of having no respect for local coaches who he accuses of accepting bribes, making such allegations without evidence.
The fans blame President Koroma for reappointing Paul Kamara as Sports Minister even though the minister failed them woefully during his first tenure of office. The aggrieved fans vowed to march to State House in a peaceful demonstration to register to the president their disappointment over the reappointment of Paul Kamara. They pleaded with the president to replace Paul Kamara with a competent minister.
