Eye Clinic boss applauds APC government
Head of the Eye Clinic Department at Connaught Hospital, Freetown, Dr. Mathew Vandi has applauded the ruling APC government of President Ernest Bai Koroma to empower the department with training opportunities for better service delivery in the country as there are only two trained eye specialists in the country.
Dr. Mathew Vandi made this disclosure in an exclusive interview with this press at his office on Wallace-Johnson Street in Freetown. He said as part of their recent successes, each district government hospital can now boast of an eye clinic department across the country. According to him, with the support of government and other donor agencies they have saved the sight of a good number of people in places like Kambia, Magburaka, Koinadugu, Pujehun, Moyamba, Bonthe, Kono, Kailahun, Kenema and the Western Area. He noted that such mobile eye clinics are too expensive for the department to continue taking into consideration the limited resources of the department. However, Dr. Vandi pointed out that eye patients do not need to come just to Freetown for treatment but that they could be treated if they visit other eye clinics in the rural areas.
Dr. Vandi expressed satisfaction over the equipment donated to the Eye Clinic Department by Sight Savers International, Standard Chartered Bank and recently, according to Dr. Vandi, the European Union has joined the other donors in empowering the department with more equipments and training facilities to save more sights in the country.
Dr. Vandi, being the only trained doctor in government service, emphasized that everybody is vulnerable to blindness. He advised all and sundry to visit the clinics for prompt treatment to prevent blindness. He recalled that those with eye problem could be treated to contribute immensely towards national development, adding that disability is not inability.
Dr. Vandi furthered that the appointment of the sight impaired Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs is a laudable step taken by President Koroma to empower the disable community in Sierra Leone.
