Vimetco undertakes community development in Sierra Leone

In 2012, Vimetco–SMHL Bauxite Mining Company undertook various community development projects in all the five chiefdoms within its concessions: Upper Banta, Lower Banta and Dasse in Moyamba District; Bumpe Ngao in Bo District; and Kpanda Kemoh in Bonthe District.  (Photo: Multi-purpose Community Barri with Office, Store and a VIP Latrine at Gbonge, Kpanda Kemoh Chiefdom)

The projects completed include:

1)   Multi-purpose Community Barri in Gbonge, Kpanda Kemoh Chiefdom
2)   Multi-purpose Community Barri in Gondama, Upper Banta Chiefdom
3)   Maternity and Child Health Post in Kanga, Lower Banta chiefdom
4)   Three-classroom Junior Secondary School building at Bardja Junction, Dasse Chiefdom
5)   One water-well with hand pump each at Kpanguma, Lower Banta Chiefdom, Senehun and Mokepie in Upper Banta Chiefdom

Vimetco-SMHL also repaired very important outlet roads such as Mosenesie – Moyamba Road (done jointly with Sierra Rutile Limited and Gondama – Serabu Road.  The Company assists Serabu Hospital with 450 liters (100 gallons) of diesel monthly.

In addition to the infrastructural development, Sierra Minerals Holdings Ltd also offered to scholarships to FIVE University students for the 2011/2012 academic year.

AWARD OF ONE-YEAR SCHOLARSHIPS TO FIVE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

On Thursday, 26th January, 2012, the five University students who were selected to benefit from the SMHL Scholarships were invited to a presentation ceremony. The ceremony was attended by the Chairman of SMHL Foundation, Landowners Federation Chairman, Paramount Chief of Upper Banta Chiefdom, the Media Representative, General Manager and Community Affairs personnel of SMHL.

The five students included:

  1. Emmanuel Simbo (Kpanda Kemoh) – Fourah Bay College – Geology
  2. Vandi J. Seppeh (Lower Banta) – Fourah Bay College – Geology
  3. Jonathan Williams (Upper Banta) – Fourah Bay College – Geology
  4. Alhassan Kpovowai (Imperi)  – Fourah Bay College – Engineering
  5. Ms. Bernice Kanga (Lower Banta) – College of Management Studies (USL) – Business Management.

Each of the students received a cheque of Le 3,000,000.
