Blind Minister inspires the blind in Sierra Leone

The Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs, Mustapha Bai Attila (photo) on Tuesday, 26th February, 2013 paid an inspirational and spirited visit to the School for the Blind at Wilkinson Road, Freetown.

The Minister made an on the spot visit to every classroom while classes were in session and later assembled and engaged the Headmaster , teachers, and pupils in a dialogue that left an indelible print on the hearts and minds of all present.

In his short statement, the Deputy Minister, who is also visually impaired, entreated blind pupils to be courageous and God fearing which, according to him, are the best virtues in life, stressing that every human being should have courage and faith in the Almighty God.

Attila noted that the School for the Blind holds a reputation in and out of Sierra Leone, citing that the nation’s first musical heroes, the “Blind Musical Flames” are products of the school. The Minister reflected his hey days in the school when they were having healthy competitions in topping the class in examinations and how respectful they were to school authorities and the elderly people.

Mustapha Bai Attila assured the blind pupils that His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma is very much thoughtful about the physically challenged in the society and it has pleased him to test the ability and performance of disabled people, especially the visually challenged, by entrusting one of them with a public office.

After addressing the school, the Deputy Minister made a conducted tour of the school facilities together with the headmaster, Mr. Sandy, his staff and officials from the ministry. During a stop at the school library, the Minister was so excited over the improvement made over the years on the library which has been equipped with nine brand new computers and shelves of novels including African and European series which were not available in their own days. He also thanked the government and the Ministry of Education for their immense support to the school.

Finally, Mustapha Bai Attila told the pupils to have respect for authorities and to pay great attention to their teachers and study hard to succeed in life. He promised to be visiting the school on a daily basis.
