Muslims Protest against Chief Imam in Sierra Leone

Santigie Momoh and other members of the United Muslim League (UML) Brothers have expressed their dissatisfaction over the administration of Chief Imam, Shiek Osman Bangura in a news conference over the weekend.

Santigie Momoh noted that the UML comprise of 14 mosques, saying the Imam in question was only recently appointed by the Islamic Shiite and the Ahmadiyya Muslim organizations. He revealed that the existing acrimony stemmed from the Chief Imam’s failure to address issues surrounding his relationship with politicians and the police.

He questioned that how can such a religious reputable organization sit idly by and watch their figurehead continue to plunge the image of the family into mud through his selfish behavior. He pointed that the past national election had prevented members to officially register their protest to the appropriate stakeholders for possible redress.

He furthered that the Inspector General of police Francis Alieu Munu, Assistant Inspector General, Head of Operation Mr. Manner of Ross Road Police Division, Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the D Divisional Headquarter, Honorable Kargbo of Constituency (99), Councillor Sheku Turay of ward 354, Alusine Conteh of ward 355, the Civil Society, the Human Rights, Supreme Islamic Council, United Council of Imams, National Chief Imam (UCISL), The Regional Chief Imam East Sierra Leone Muslim Missionary Union, Rokupr Community, Portee Community and Sheik Osman I Bangura have all been informed of their dissatisfaction.

He highlighted that the founding fathers of the UML aims were to see that the UML formulates peace, and establish tranquility within various mosques. He noted also that the founding fathers also wanted lectures to be rotated among various scholars of the Islamic faith who were supposed to be sharing lectures across to other mosques in the country, to transparently direct resources within the mosque, to catalog a proper resource center for all mosques, forming effective constitutions to control mosques.

Analyzing the lapses at the Gadafi Mosque which he alleged that the Chief Imam is in entire control of without any deputy to precede him, coupled with weak financial control and auditing procedures. The Chief Imam is also blamed to have succeeded in driving the UML out of the mosque by closing down of its office, the toilet facilities and ablution area of the mosque and handed over the keys to his close relatives.

Momoh disclosed that the piece of land upon which the mosque was built was offered by the UML for the purpose of empowering the people.
