Navy boss upgrades naval base

The night I visited Sierra Leone Naval Base at Gbangbatoke in Moyamba District, I was left with no alternative but to reach the conclusion that the soldier commanding the base is a classical example of a dedicated, decent and development-oriented officer who has gone a long way in projecting a positive image of the RSLAF in that area.

When I entered the base, I was almost blinded by the bright electricity that confronted me. Then came the aroma of stew which sent my mouth watering. The stiff security at the gate decorated by the newly-built UN-standard security post and the overall orderliness that characterized the fenced base crowned my admiration for the commander, Lieutenant Kamara whose good works have endeared him to the residents of Gbangbtoke and its environs.

During my brief visit, I realized that Lieutenant Kamara is maintaining a very cordial relationship with not only his junior officers but also the community people who are full of praise for the young and dynamic commander. Together with his junior officers, I met the commander watching an exhilarating war movie on his laptop computer.  Exchanging jokes amid hysteric laughter, they were all in high spirits.

As a way of trying to strengthen further the already strong civilian-military relationship, Lieutenant Kamara is now hard at work organizing a disco jamboree to be attended by the famous military dance band.

Already the mining companies operating in the area, Sierra Rutile and Vimetco, including the community people, have all pledged their wholehearted support to the commander to make the dance a never-to-be-forgotten show.

The only fault that tainted my visit was the deplorable state of the Land Rover jeep used by commander Kamara and his junior officers. The vividly old and rickety vehicle has become a death trap endangering the precious lives of the soldiers. The ramshackle state of the Land Rover is a disgrace to the RSLAF. My brief ride in the jeep left my pelvic girdle almost broken and I had cause to run to the nearest pharmacy to buy pain killer as soon as I disembarked the dilapidated vehicle!
