Kei Kamara voted Sierra Leonean player of the year 2012

Sporting Kansas City striker Kei Ansu Kamara has been voted the Sierra Leonean Player of The Year 2012 by viewers of sierraleonefootball.com website rewarding him for his outstanding performance for both club and country.

The announcement was made by living football legend Mohamed Kallon on a live radio programme linked worldwide by sierraleonefootball.com on Sunday.

The 28-year old striker will be presented with a specially designed trophy to wrap up a golden season for him. He scored just over 52% of the votes beating his closest challenger the Serbia- based Mohamed ‘Medo’ Kamara by close to 10%.

The duo were among five shortlisted Leone Stars first team players for the sierraleonefootball.com maiden prestigious award drawn up after selected Sierra Leonean Sports Journalists and football coaches voted for their best three Sierra Leonean players of the year 2012.

The other contenders were Sheriff Suma who plays for FK Ravan in Azerbaijan, Umaru ‘Zingaly’ Bangura of Norwegian club FK Haguesund and FC Kallon goal Keeper Christian Caulker.

Suma came third bagging less than 4% of the votes whilst Caulker finished fourth with just over 1% and Bangura came fifth scoring less than 1%.

Kamara who recently had a one week training with English Premier League club had a remarkable season for both club and country in 2012 and won several awards.

He finished up as both his club’s and the African top goal scorer in the USA Major League Soccer with 11 goals, his highest goals scored in a single season.

The Kenema born goal poacher was also named by Sporting Kansas City as the club’s 2012 Offensive Player and Humanitarian of the year.

At international level, Kamara opened his Leone Stars account after scoring two of the team’s four goals to see off Sao Tome & Principe in the 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifiers in Freetown in June and has been instrumental in the team.

Winner: Kei Ansu Kamara (Sporting Kansas City & Leone Stars) 52.2%

Runners Up: Mohamed Medo Kamara (Partizan Belgrade & Leone Stars) 42.5%

Third Place: Sheriff Suma (FK Ravan & Leone Stars) 3.4%

Fourth Place: Christian Caulker (Kallon FC & Leone Stars) 1.1%

Fifth Place: Umaru Bangura (FK Haugesund & Leone Stars) 0.8%
