Melqosh Mission feeds hundreds in Freetown

A United Kingdom-based humanitarian organization has stretched its wings down to Sierra Leone where hundreds of Sierra Leonean amputees, war widows and widowers as well as orphans, benefited from the organization’s charitable gesture.  (Photo: Former amputees Chairman and now Advocacy President of Melquosh pose with other amputees)

On Boxing Day December 26, Melqosh Mission – a non-profitable organization, engaged amputees in a cook-out that fed hundreds at Rokel Amputees Camp.

The event was graced by the former President of the Amputees War-wounded Association and currently Advocacy President of Melqosh Mission, the Honourary Jusu Jaka, and other Chairpersons of the various amputee camp as well as friends of Melqosh from the United Kingdom, Germany and United States of America.

The mission also provided cash gifts, medicine, clothing, rice and drinks to the amputees that brought huge smiles on their faces especially coming at a time of the festive season.

Melqosh had previously held a pre-Christmas cook-out and cash gifts for amputees at the Grafton Amputee Camp last November.’

The donation came at a time the forgotten amputees had nothing to celebrate.  Quite apart from that, Melqosh had also sponsored a College student, Ibrahim Sawaneh to continue his studies at the Freetown Teachers College. Sawaneh is an Orphan and a son of a deceased amputee at the Grafton Amputees Camp.

Also to benefit from the Melqosh windfall was a 28-year old lady who was forced into prostitution to cater for the needs of her eight siblings. Further educational sponsorship was granted to two motherless children of a deceased amputee.

Melqosh Mission Founder, Faith Okra-Smart said the purpose of the events is to put smiles on the faces of the amputees in line with the theme ‘Season of Goodwill.’  She also stated the organisation is fervently working towards strategic provisions for the amputees, the war-wounded and their families to live and achieve meaningful lives despite their disabilities.

Faith romances with amputees at Rokel

Jusu Jaka explicated that the priority concern of his fellow amputees are medical needs, welfare and educational opportunities for the children of the amputees both in secondary schools and further educational institutions.

He stated that he is thrilled about Melqosh Mission’s plans to commence a mobile health clinic for the various amputee camps. This will alleviate their priority needs as the amputees have no access to medical care and are dying as a result of their war afflictions.

Part of Melqosh Mission’s Agenda for the Amputees this year is to actively advocate to the Government and other concerned authorities on behalf of  the amputees and their children who are the legacy of tomorrow  for the relief of poverty and advancement of education, complimenting the current Government’s Agenda for Prosperity.
