Human Rights Observers Issue Preliminary Report

The Western Area Human Rights Committee in collaboration with special court interactive forum presented a preliminary report to journalists on the 2012 elections on Friday 23rd November at their office in Freetown.  Their aim was to monitor the 2012 elections and analyze various human rights concerns.

Reading the preliminary report to journalists, Mr. Suliaman Jabati, one of the observers said Western Area Human Rights Committee (WAHRC) is a network of civil society organizations (CSOs) working in human rights, rule of law and good governance, adding that it was established through facilitation and technical support from UNIPSIL, noting that the initiative to monitor human rights abuse and violence during the 2012 elections is pursuant to this mandate.

He further noted that both SCIF and WAHRC discovered that all observers (national and international) are mostly concerned about the election results and not the human rights violations and abuses during the electioneering process some of which might impact the outcome of the result.

He noted as human rights defenders they consider these issues very significant towards ensuring free, fair and peaceful election and therefore must be documented and appropriate recommendations made and to address these human rights concerns they were able to design the following objectives

To ensure compliance by political parties, Government, NEC, PPRC ect to national, regional and international human rights instruments in the conduct of the 2012 elections.

To ensure that all those who commit election related human right violations and abuses are accountable through transparent, free and fair judicial process.

To raise awareness among the public on the need to ensure the observance of human rights during and after elections.

To proffer recommendations to international community, NEC, PPRC, IMC, HRS-SL and incoming government the need to include observance to human rights in all national electoral processes
