23 Fullahs bag SLPP symbols
The opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) awarded a total of 23 symbols to candidates belonging to the Fullah ethnic group to contest the November 17th general elections in the Republic of Sierra Leone; unlike the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) which has given 3 symbols to Fullah candidates for November 17th, 2012.
This disclosure was made on Monday 4th November, at the SLPP hall on Wallace Johnson Street in Freetown where a group of Fullah people from diverse sectors pledged their support for the Sierra Leone People’s Party ahead of this month’s elections.
Speaking on behalf of the group of Fullah people, Freetown-based businessman Abu Bakarr Jalloh alias AKJ explained that they have seen reason to support the SLPP get clear victory in the elections because of its manifesto and position for the development of the country.
AKJ maintained that the party when in power gave 7 key positions to the Fullahs. He noted that it was under Maada Bio that a large number of Fullahs came together to form the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) party some 15 years ago. However, AKJ said the rumors getting around that the Fullahs are supporting the APC is not true, as according to him the Fullahs as the third largest ethnic group in the country has the right like other tribes to support the political party of their choice. “We know what the SLPP is capable of doing in terms of good governance in the country,” AKJ noted.
Alpha Wurie former Minister of Education under the defunct SLPP regime at the reaffirmation ceremony thanked the Fullah community especially in the Western Area whom he said have been loyal to his party. He underscored that only the SLPP cares more for the Fullah community and have made the climate favorable for them in terms business and education than any other party in the country. He said the crowd of youths and elderly Fullah people that were present in the SLPP hall demonstrates the good relationship that exists between the party and the Fullah community. He said the Fullahs are not strangers to the SLPP as they were founding members of the party.
Running Mate for the SLPP, Dr. Kadie Sesay in her statement said the party has full fledged respect for the Fullah community in the entire country. She said the Fullahs will be well protected if the SLPP achieve victory in these elections, noting that the Fullahs are not foreigners in the country.
Dr. Kadie Sesay expressed that the SLPP feels sorry for what the NDA is currently going through as it is still in the High Court of Sierra Leone.
