“Security Threats Challenging…” ONS

The Office of National Security (ONS) has confirmed that security threats are more diverse and challenging in the buildup of the November 17th Multi-tier elections than they were during the 2007 general elections. The security sector has therefore developed an integrated election security strategy to provide adequately prepared, engendered and resources to perform election-security related duties with professionalism, gender sensitivity, impartiality and credibility thereby ensuring that a safe and secure environment is created for all stakeholders, particularly vulnerable and marginalized groups during the conduct of the 2012 election.

The ONS convened a press briefing past Friday which hosted an impressive number of sector stakeholders and a battery of pressmen where it was revealed that the security sector through the Integrated Election Strategy Committee (IESC) has collaborated with the civil society to develop the 2012 integrated election security communication strategy manual with key theme and messages. The manual guides the conduct of actors within the national security architecture during the election and it gives an overview of the care issues in providing elections security.

The communication strategy manual also serves as the basis for carrying out training of relevant actors within the National Security architecture and also targets those actors who will be carrying out services across the country. With full implementation of the communication strategy in consonance with other significant measures being adopted, the security sector is now in a better and stronger position to provide the enabling environment.
