Sierra Rutile named ‘2012 International Company of the Year

Sierra Rutile Ltd was named ‘2012 International Company of the Year’ by the UK’s business, stock market and investment elite this month becoming, in the process, the first Sierra Leonean company to win a prestigious Alternative Investment Market (AIM) Award.

Receiving the accolade, at the AIM Awards Ceremony in London, was Sierra Rutile’s CEO John Sisay, who said:  “This Award represents the achievement, dedication and hard work of every individual within the Company, and I am honoured to accept it on their behalf.”

The AIM ‘International Company of the Year Award’ goes to internationally based AIM-listed companies who have demonstrated outstanding all-round achievement.  It comes after an exceptional year for Sierra Rutile which has been marked by record sales, record production rates and their best ever health and safety figures.

Last quarter’s production of 26,381 tonnes of rutile beat the Company’s previous production record by 4%.  Recent employee health and safety figures suggest that lost time injury frequency rates are down by over 50% on last year and are comparable with best international standards. Expansion plans are ahead of schedule with the successful construction of a dry mining operation, which is on target to begin operations in November; and a recently completed feasibility study into an additional dredge mining operation confirmed the Company’s potential to become a significant long-term supplier of rutile to the world market.

The Company, which has a 95% Sierra Leonean workforce, is also out-performing in other important areas.  A Company commitment to rehabilitate all legacy disturbed land over the next six years is already ahead of schedule; and its longstanding programme to tackle HIV/AIDS in the workplace and community has brought improved health education and access to HIV testing and treatment to a remote area of Sierra Leone, and has been held up as a model for corporate action against HIV/AIDS in Sierra Leone and internationally.

John Sisay says that he hopes that this award inspires other Sierra Leonean companies to realise their potential.   “This Award recognises that Sierra Leonean companies can deliver world class products and stand on an international platform as leaders within our fields.  In a global economy hit by recession in Europe and stagnation in Asia and the United States, Sierra Leone has the advantage of growth.  Our Country has unique gifts; if we work together to harness these, we can create a society in which everyone has the opportunity to benefit.”
