Iron Lady Foundation Dishes 60 Scholarships
The Iron Lady Foundation was founded in October 2010 at 174 Fourah Bay Road, Freetown, with the purpose and aim of helping the less privileged in various communities. Three years on that the foundation has existed, 60 pupils have been given scholarships.
Thirty pupils became immediate beneficiaries during the official launch of the foundation on October 19 at Hotel 5-10, Kissy. One of the beneficiaries Mariatu Suma of the Freetown Secondary School for Girls (FSSG), said she gained admission into school when one day, a lady from the Iron Lady Foundation met her hording a few items for her aunt as she was brought from the interior as a ward to serve such purpose.
“She asked why I was not at school, and then I explained to her that I came from a poor family background that is not able to pay my fees. I said my aunt brought me all the way from Kambia, Samu District to be precise, to assist her in doing some house chores which include hording a few items around to eek a living. She was moved by my explanation and arranged my schooling. This was how I gained admission into school”, she explained.
Mariatu was being monitored by the foundation in her studies and thank God she came out with flying colors when she sat the National Primary Schools Examination.
One of the beneficiary mothers, Fatmata Sesay of No 4 Parsonage Street, Kissy, in her contribution said she is a petty-trader who faces lots of constrains in educating her daughter. She extended her profound thanks and gratitude to the Iron Lady Foundation and all those who contributed in diverse ways to make this launching successful.
Dr. Rashid Kamara, in her remarks supported the initiative for taking care of the less privileged girl child around the various communities as such was an act of patriotism and a sign of commitment to improving the human resource capacity of the country for which she applaud the Iron Lady Foundation.
Dr. Rashid Kamara went on: “as a medical practitioner, I am going to focus on the theme ‘Care of the Girl Child’ from a medical point of view, girl child care starts at birth, the nutritional stage of a child is very important as it facilitates their development milestones, in recognition of the parents’ care that leads the child to start crawling, walking and speech development.”
Chairperson of the Iron Lady Foundation, Madam Sanusie, in delivering her keynote address said the launching was a stepping stone in the history of the Iron Lady Foundation. She said the foundation was established upon the consent of her husband who saw the need to give care to destitute and less privileged children in the various communities.
“Even the vice chair lady of this organization has trained and supported girls who have achieved their university education and as I said earlier, my house is now home for many boys and girls. Moreover, the foundation relied on favours and pledges given by people, on this she explained that the organization is taking care of the health of children under their control and also take care of their basic needs in trying to help them more in their academic studies, also members of the foundation paid regular visits to the schools of the children’s,” she explained.
“I must also admit that the successes were also favorable as we are able to help beneficiaries through our dues and pledges among members, and whenever parents or guidance report illness of any beneficiary we take care of their health because we have three trained and qualified nurses in this foundation and if its serious they are referred to a medical doctor. They are all doing well at school as we have two good NPSE results for 2012 with scores 331 and 275. We have our Headquarters at 174 Fourah Bay Road and as for our motto ‘Play Your Part’ it was taken from a book named Ladies in Waiting, this is one of the ten secret ways to success, indeed many people have played their own part”, she concluded.
