Adolescent and Sexual Reproductive Health For Young People
The National Youth Commission on Friday 19th October organized a one day Multi sectoral program for adolescent and young people on sexual reproductive health at the Grassroots Gender Empowerment GGEM Building at 58 Jones Street, Freetown.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chairperson Harriette K.Sillah NAYCOM board member said that the training is very important and timely as participant fully aware the value of the training that gears towards the national development on adolescent as it is a very significant in the participation of young people in making economic discussion in the country.
She said that the training is a bid to promote adolescents and young people in the prevention of HIV/AIDS adding that the objective of the training is for participants to become knowledge about the circumstances around adolescence and to be more sensitive to their needs and at the same time to be better equipped with the information and services.
The Program Assistant Manso Bangura give an overview of the training stating that the Commission had being embanking on capacitating building for young people on different activities at communities at various levels.
Mr. Bangura also stated that they have established youths clubs targeting ghetto youths which is the Wisdom club, and the social club which is the Action club which were in a total of 120 participants at various communities who are the present beneficiaries of the training in their different communities as well as creating job employment for them in line with issues surrounding health.
He noted that young people are very important and that they have been also embanking on services of clubs sensitization towards the use of contraceptives among adolescents as many around the world do so without adequate knowledge about sexually transmitted disease and as a result do not use contraception or protection against STIs including HIV/AIDS.
The deputy commissioner Miss Aminata Sillah who launched the training session said that young people need to acquire enough knowledge in terms of sexual reproductive health issues as youths and young people have been misrepresented in national development that has numerous challenges.
She said that young people need to do more research to know more about the day to day happenings of the world that centers around adolescence and sexual reproductive health which will prevent them from unwanted and teenage pregnancy that will make them to become school dropouts as she applauded the hard work of present leaders in the promotion of adolescent and young people in the country as a way forward towards national concern for national development.
She advised young people to take up responsibilities to participate in discussion making adding that young people should discourage politicians in misusing them to perpetrate violence especially when the elections are around the corner but to engage them in terms of policy making discussion making decisions towards national development as they are very much responsible as they are the future leaders to come.
