Gbalamuya Custom Division Collects Le334 M

The Gbalamuya Custom Division of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) has recorded Le334 millions as tax revenue collected as at 15th September, 2012.

This figure was disclosed recently by the senior NRA Custom Collector at Gbalamuya, Malcolm Sigismond Wilkinson.

According to the NRA Senior Collector, who assumed office barely five months ago, the Le334 million represents a smooth increase to the previous revenue collected in 2011.

Mr. Wilkinson told this press at his Gbalamuya office that NRA headquarters has placed a Le500 million revenue collection target for that post.  The versatile and hard working collector noted that since his takeover in Kambia, the custom post has been experiencing lots of changes, especially the removal of negative mechanisms like the slap style which was a syndicate to defraud the state.

With 30 years experience in tax collection, especially with the Customs and Excise department, Wilkinson states that the revenue target is expected to double up in 2013 and blamed the current political instability in neighboring Guinea as a major factor impeding the increase. “Guinean politics is causing a slow movement of people and trade across the boarder. This is telling hard on our revenue” the NRA Boss bemoaned.

The NRA collector also revealed that active work is now progressing to install and roll-out the ASYCUDA system at the new Gbalamuya post which will help to combat smugglers as everything will now go electronic. “People will stop blaming us for over or under charging as everything will be done electronically”, he said.
