Cholera infection drops
Freetown, 12th September, 2012: The Improved partnership and cooperation between Government and development partners, including other stakeholders, and the effective management of cases, has resulted in a reduction in cholera cases throughout the country.
This development was Wednesday 12th September 2012, reported to the Presidential Task Force cholera meeting by the Director of Disease Surveillance and Control in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Amara Jambai, while making a review and on-going efforts to curb the cholera outbreak throughout the country.
Dr. Jambia disclosed that under-utilized Cholera Treatment Units (CTUs) like that of Moa Warf in Freetown, will be closed, and recommended that other areas be specifically targeted for sustained action, while additional logistics are provided to other areas.
Chairman of the Presidential Task Force set up by President Ernest Bai Koroma, State House Chief of Staff, Dr. Kaifala Marrah described the reduction as Good News which indicates all-round success in the on-going joint anti-cholera campaign.
The Presidential Task Force approved a National General Cleaning exercise to be held on the 29th and 30th September 2012, as a means of maintaining a clean and healthy environment, with the active collaboration and cooperation with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Environmental Protection Agency, local councils, Inter-religious Council, specialized agencies, youth and women groups, civil society amongst others, in Freetown and in the regions.
Meanwhile, the UN agency, UNICEF is providing litter bins for markets in Freetown, while mobile telephone companies are currently working towards constructing more public toilets in Freetown as part of their corporate social responsibilities.
At the same time, a monitoring report from six districts by the Strategic Policy Unit in the Office of the President at State House, was well received with plans to extend it to the other six districts and calls for sustainability of current actions and enforcing health and sanitation laws and revival of the special Sanitary Court.
