Biography of Yarta B. Sesay, Sr.

Yarta B. Sesay, Sr. was born in 1947 at Biriwa Limba Chiefdom Bombali East Bumban Village, he was raised in Freetown, Cline Town, Canekai.  He attended the model school of Kissy dockyard W.A.M Collegiate Secondary School at Wilkinson Road where his passion for education began.

Yarta has been involved with APC since he was a teenager.  At the age of thirteen he became involved with the APC and in 1964 was elected to the position of Propaganda Secretary for East Ward 1 Freetown. In 1967 he was elected to the position of Propaganda Secretary for Bombali East. In 1969-1970 Yarta entered the Electoral Commission attached to the Moyanba elections office for six months, then returned to Freetown/Tower Hill.  In 1970 he was appointed to the Intelligence Service where he faithfully served until 1973.

In continuous pursuit of knowledge, Yarta left his country to seek education.  In the United States he attended Luther Rice College (VA) where he earned a Bachelors of Science in political science with honors.  In 1976 he then pursued and earned a Masters of Business Administration Public Administration degree from South Eastern University in Washington, D.C.

Yarta has owned and operated Tupaddy Cleaning & Janitorial Supply Company in Houston, TX for over thirty years. He is also faithfully committed to his community as well as his country of Sierra Leone.  He, along with friends, have vowed to make a difference in the education in Sierra Leone.  With monetary and in-kind donations they support the students and teachers of St. Theresa Primary School in Bumban by funding a new building including four classrooms and administrative offices.  Yarta has also recently secured the assistance of a local organization to provide shoes for each child that attends the primary school.

Yarta actively attends church and has been married to Aminata T.Janneh Sesay of Sierra Leone since 1978.  Their first born, Marie, is a Sociology Professor and a doctoral candidate at The University of Texas at Austin and their son Jr. is a United States Marine and is currently in graduate school at The University of Houston (TX). Yarta and Aminata are the proud grandparents of Mycah Sesay.
