Sierra Rutile Boosts Non-Violence Campaign
On the 24th August 2012, Youth Forum Network Sierra Leone concluded a day’s symposium on peace and non-violence, at the Women’s Education Center Kissy Grassfield with support from Sierra Rutile Company Limited as part of their corporate social responsibility.
In his opening remarks the National Coordinator of the Youth Network encouraged his peers to stay away from all forms of violence as that is not the best solution for their voices to be heard. He furthered that peace is something that someone has to work for and not for sale. “With peace in our country, our people will be able to move about in safety and this is why we will continue to advocate for a peaceful co-existence among our kits and keen.” The Executive Director of students for peace and development Mr. Mohamed T K Rahman commended the Youth Forum Network and Sierra Rutile for such a laudable initiative, and entreated the organizers and their partners to encourage young people to abstain from violence especially as we approach the November 2012 Elections, Rahman further went on to recognized the 10% quota for young people in all forms of decision making process as one of the recommendations made by the TR C.
The Master Peace Sierra Lone chapter Mr. Charles Boyie in his statement pointed out that youth marginalization is one of the key issues that led to the eleven years civil war in Sierra Leone, and therefore called on all stakeholders to give the youths what is rightfully belong to them thereby actualizing the 10% quota for the youth. He entreated participants not to allow any politician to use them for their selfish interest as this has the potential to rob them off their youthful age.
The chairman for the Western Urban District Youth Council Mr. Mohamed B. Koroma, also encouraged his colleague youths to stay focused and avoid all forms of violence as that will not bear good fruit and will subsequently lead to degradation of our society and the country as a whole and even the future of the young people.
