Manley Spaine elected deputy speaker

Freetown, August  24 (SLENA : After a week long heated debate among MPs over the recent appointment of Member of Parliament, Manley Spaine as speaker following the departure on vacation leave of the substantive holder, parliament has finally resolved the impasse by electing Manley Spaine, representing the ruling APC party, as deputy speaker of the house.

Candidates were nominated from both side of the political divide. Hon. Yapo Conteh nominated Hon Manley Spaine, seconded by Hon Alhaji Buya Kamara while on the opposition side, Hon. Elizabeth Alpha Lavalie nominated Hon. Dr. Ibraihim Kamanada of the SLPP and seconded by Hon David Sorriba.

The voting result, which was done through secret ballot, showed that Hon. Manley Spaine scored 63 votes while Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Kamanda got 43 votes. There was one void.

The Clerk of Parliament, Hon. Ibrahim Sesay then pronounced Hon. Manley Spaine  as the winner, hence the new deputy speaker of the house.

Following that election, nomination fees for presidential candidates, members of parliament, local councils and village headmen were laid before the house by the leader of the house, Hon.SBB Dumbuya.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation,  Ebun Jusu has tabled in parliament the bill titled  the ‘Sierra Leone Red Cross Society Act’ while the Minister of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s  Affairs,  Steven Guajia also  tabled the bill titled the ‘Geneva Conventions  Act 2012’ and the ‘Sexual Offences  Act 2102’.
