The legislative house of Sierra Leone’s Parliament today commenced a tense debate on the much talked about National Electoral Commission’s (NEC) nomination fee paper, which was laid before the House on Tuesday 21st August, 2012.

Leaders from the majority and minority parties in parliament told this press that they will be putting forward different opinions and debate about NEC’s nomination fees ahead of the November 17 elections.

According to Hon. S B B Dumbuya, leader of majority APC party in parliament, MPs from their side of the house will be going for the reduced prescribed fees put forward by the NEC. While Hon. Emmanuel Tommy minority party Leader noted that the opposition will be pushing for further reductions to those prescribed fees.

Hon. Tommy noted that they would prefer the NEC to reduce the Presidential nomination fees to Le20 million from the Le100million prescribed earlier.

Hon. Coulson A Turay representing APC in Constituency 98, also being the National Deputy Publicity Secretary of APC, said the Le100 million nomination fee prescribed by the NEC is not too much for a Sierra Leonean vying for the highest seat in the country.

He debunked allegations that the colossal sums are a human rights abuse as every Sierra Leonean with money is allowed to contest without hindrance or barrier.

Hon. Coulson Turay called on all to support NEC and make the November 17 elections credible, transparent, and fair.

Meanwhile, NEC’s Western District Commissioner, Madam Miatta French assured this press that despite the delay in processing the nomination paper before the Well of Parliament, there is no problem regarding NEC’s timeline for nominations and campaigns.  She said all strategies have been put in place for the conduct of election in November.
