Over Approval of Nomination Fees…NEC Under Pressure

The External Outreach Officer of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) Albert Massaquoi has expressed concern over the delay by parliament to endorse the nomination fees slammed by his Commission for political aspirants vying for various state positions in the November 2012 polls.

Talking to this press, Albert Massaquoi said owing to a recent saga in the Legislative House on who is to be appointed as temporal Speaker of the House, which is yet to be resolved, has raised eyebrows on both his Commission, the NEC and political aspirants; he noted this is so worrisome especially when the prescribed date set by the Electoral Body for the commencement of nomination is quickly approaching.

He said this issue of long delay and protraction will not serve both parties and that urgency is the key word now that November is around the corner.

Sierra Express contacted Hon. Amara Konuwa of the opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) over the delay of this issue, he said that Parliament will soon debate over this controversy of the document and forward for endorsement.  He explained further that he is a bit surprised as to why Parliament was unable to meet on Thursday August 16th 2012.

Meanwhile there are ongoing cries by some political aspirants for the NEC to fast track the approval of the nomination fees.

It could be recalled that various stakeholders in Sierra Leone had raise concern over what they called the colossal sums slammed by the NEC.
