First Lady commissions €1 Million Hospital complex and equipments

The complex includes intensive care, theater operation rooms, and a guest house.  This one million Euro complex and equipments is to provide more quality medical facilities for the people of Sierra Leone and the West Africa sub-region.

Commissioning the three new operating theatres, an intensive care unit, and guest house, Mrs. Sia Nyama Koroma said that the Emergency Hospital started its activities in Sierra Leone in 2001 at  Goderich and throughout the years it has helped to improve the health of the people and to relieve their suffering.

She added that the upgrade of these facilities will enhance its ability to provide  medical and surgical treatment, especially to those in the immediate community and more especially victims of ‘Okada’ accidents.

This initiative she said is in line with the Millennium Development Goals of fighting poverty, reducing child mortality and reducing maternal mortality.

Mrs. Koroma expressed concern as a health practitioner about the deterioration of the cholera situation in the country, the number of causalities and hospitalized cases has rapidly increased during the last week.

In his statement Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation Mamoud Tarawallie said  that what the Emergency hospital has manifested in Sierra Leone is  hard work and commitment.

He spoke about his ministry’s continuous collaboration with the Office of the First Lady.

Coordinator of Emergency hospital Luca Rolla, said that the policies of the hospital will always be the same in terms of providing medical facilities to the people of Sierra Leone.

He expressed gratitude to the government, especially the Ministry of Health and Sanitation for their collaborative efforts in terms of responding to the urgent medical assistance to the people of Sierra Leone.

Directorate of Reproductive and Child Health Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Samuel Kargbo said that the United Nations Joint Repot 2011 ranked Sierra Leone among other Africans countries for improvement in the health sector.

He said the free health care initiative has also reduced the high rate of maternal mortality in the country.

Speeches were made by World Health Organization, the Sierra Leone Police, Chairman of the Western Area District Council and Ministry of Finance and Economic Development. A conducted tour of the facilities was made.
