Sierra Leone delegation say goodbye to 2012 London Olympic Games
The Sierra Leone delegation of this year’s London 2012 Olympic Games said goodbye to the games on Sunday August 12th during the closing ceremony when they were part of the 204 countries that participated in the two weeks games.
The leader of the Sierra Leone delegation Unisa Deen Kargbo said that Sierra Leone presence in the games was felt from the start to the end of the games not even in the field but in other important functions where the NOC President Henry G Moore and scribe Joseph Nyande alongside the acting director of sports represented the country very well.
He also stated that the two athletes that represented the country had done their best during the games even though their best was not enough to take them to next stage of the competition. Ibrahim Turay made an improvement in his personal best time which was good, that meant the training in Hastings in the UK helped him a lot and with such training he hopes that Sierra Leone athletes can improve ahead of the 2016 Olympic games in Rio.
He also stated for Ola Sesay even though she was unable to reach the final because of her two last jumps where she had some problems, she is the first ever Sierra Leone athlete to qualify for the Olympic games which made Sierra Leonean proud because we were rating higher that most countries who do not take any qualifying athletes to the games.
Mr Kargbo also revealed that with 1,453 days to the next Olympic Games it is now left with the association to organize a programme for their various associations.
According to Seb Coe he hailed the London 2012 Olympics as a big success on Sunday and thanked all during the nation’s final farewell to the London 2012 Games.
Speaking with great pride during the closing ceremony at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, east London, he said: ‘On the first day of these Games I said we were determined to do it right. I said that these Games would see the best of us.
The success can be traced back to the people who built the stadiums and the Olympic Park from where was speaking that was once a disused and deprived district through to the organisers and the sports stars who put on a great show.
He told the packed crowd: “And thank you to the people of this country. The British people got behind London’s bid and they got behind London’s Games. Our opening ceremony proclaimed that these would be a Games for everyone. At our closing ceremony, we can say that these were a Games for everyone. London 2012 has played host to some incredible sport. To awe inspiring feats, that are the result of incredible dedication and skill by the world’s great sports men and women. To all the Olympians who came to London to compete – thank you. Those of us who came to watch witnessed moments of heroism and heartbreak that will live long in the memory. You have our admiration and our congratulations.”
IOC president Jacques Rogge said: “London was a dream for sports lovers, and I had stressed since the awarding of the Games in Singapore that we need home gold medals and that is so important for the mood of the general public. We had to wait two days but then it accelerated it has been fantastic. We are saying exactly the same for our Brazilian friends for Rio.”
