Today, the government of President Ernest Bai Koroma seems to be setting precedence on corruption in the history of the country. The dishonorable former Freetown City Mayor Herbert George Williams has been found guilty of corrupt practice, after presiding judge Justice Katutsui found him guilty-as- charged.
Kudos to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Judiciary for a job well done! Many Sierra Leoneans consider this decision as a positive sign and a bold step taken in the fight against corruption; whereas it serves as a guide to checkmate persons in positions of trust that they should abstain and refrain from corrupt practice for fear of being disgraced and convicted such offences. Again, as the noble job of the ACC and Judiciary continue, the people of this country are not expecting selective justice, bearing no room for sacred cows.
The National Electoral Commission’s (NEC) increase in nomination fees for Presidential, Parliamentary, and counselor aspirants, has provoked dissatisfaction among politicians whilst others seem to be happy with it. The people are satisfied and supportive of Dr. Christiana Thorpe’s increase in nomination fees with the concept that politics and/or governance should be for responsible and God-fearing people and not for ‘dreg-man’. Nonetheless, some think the increase in fees is minimal.
His Excellency, President Ernest Bai Koroma has returned home safely from Ghana, where he attended the funeral ceremony of the country’s late President, John Atta Mills. Back home, the burning issue amongst the ruling APC party members is about the president’s running mate for the November polls. The President’s decision will be exclusively his and will be favored by his party members. Welcome home Mr. President!
