ACC Bites Mayor Herbert Williams & Co
The eagerly awaited case featuring the Mayor of Freetown, Herbert George Williams (in photo), Chief Administrator Bowenson Philips, and five others, was held on Friday August 10,th all were found guilty on corruption related charges at the Freetown High Court presided by Justice JBA Katutsi.
The accused stood trial for twenty-five (25) count charges ranging from conspiracy to commit corruption, misappropriation of public funds, failure to comply with procurement procedures, failure to pay tax money deducted from employee’s salaries, failure to pay NASSIT contributions, etc. The accused, Mayor Herbert Williams and others were found guilty as charged.
Mayor Williams had two count charges relating to breach of procurement procedures and money lending to host the Morgan Heritage musical concert show; others accused were found guilty on a one count charge related to misappropriation of public funds.
Justice Katutsi pronounced judgment in view of the evidence tendered before him; his court found the accused guilty over some of the allegations put forward by the prosecution, (ACC team). Defense Counsel Yarda Williams pleaded bail for his client Herbert George Williams but this was refused by Justice Katutsi.
Justice Katutsi ordered the immediate detention of the accused at Pademba Road Maximum Prison Facility until Wednesday August 15th when final judgment will be delivered.
The two other indictees, Arthur Kwesi-John, Deputy Chief Administrator, Freetown City Council, and Lebanese businessman Mohammed Allie Shabaan were acquitted and discharged.
