While handing over the cheque to President Koroma, the Anti-graft czar informed the President that over six billion Leones have been presented to the government of Sierra Leone by the Commission since 2008. He also profusely commended the astute and visionary leadership of President Koroma for his unflinching support to the Commission in carrying out its mandate.
“With regards to the mandate of the commission, we are proud to present to you a cheque to the total value of the sum of Le552 million, and we thank you for the support that you continue to give to us,” said the ebullient Commissioner of the ACC Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara. He also noted that the Commission is looking forward to presenting close to Le2.5 billion by the end of the year.
President Koroma described the gains made by the ACC as a result of the perfect collaboration within the Commission, from the advisory board to management and staff of the ACC, and that government has given the space to ensure that the graft bureau operates as an independent institution.
“We are happy with the progress that you are making as a Commission. It is our commitment as a nation to fight against this great cancer that has bedeviled the progress of our society,” he said, adding that, “I am sure with the strategies in place we shall get there”.
President Koroma acknowledged the challenges facing the ACC as there are people who are trying hard to out-smart the Commission, while others are bent on crying down the system, giving the impression that the ACC is not as effective as it should be.
The President also noted that history will judge his government favourably as it was under his stewardship that the ACC was given the independence it needs to function effectively. He also applauded the Commission for is efforts in the fight against corruption in Sierra Leone.
