NaCSA Commissions GPC Lorry Park at Lumpa Waterloo

In a bid to enhance service delivery in the transport sector the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA) with financial support from the Federal Republic of Germany through the German Development Bank yesterday commissioned the multipurpose Lumpa Lorry Park at Waterloo implemented by Pro-poor Growth for Peace Consolidation (GPC) programme. (Photo: Federal Minister for International Development (GIZ) Dirk Niebel flanked by NaCSA staff, Finance Minister Dr. Samura Kamara and Local Council Chairman Al-Hassan Cole on a conducted tour of the commissioned Lumpa lorry park)

Federal Minister for International Development (GIZ) Dirk Niebel said the lorry park project came as a result of a request by the government and people of Sierra Leone which was granted by the German government.  

He stated that the lorry park will create economic benefits for the people and hoped that it will become a transshipment Station that provides safety wire houses and adequate parking space.

He called on the people to monitor the use of the facilities to ensure its desired objective is achievable and called for continuous maintenance and responsible use of the structures as large markets has emerged around the lorry park to ensure sustenance and viability

The Federal Minister said the facilities will increase income for the people and also promotes development and assured of continued corporation with Germany towards the young people and consolidation of peace.

He stated that “We are reliable partner towards the development of Sierra Leone” he concluded

Earlier giving an over of the project NaCSA Commissioner Saidu Conton Sesay said eleven million Euro was provided by the German Government since 2006 for the construction of the lorry parks across the country but that the project was later reviewed in 2010.

He said a similar project is also underway in Kailahun and Koinadugu and there are plans to extend socio economic infrastructures to Kono in a bid to create a point for the exchange of goods for the local market.

The NaCSA Commissioner added that several training opportunities have been provided for management committee and user groups with an intensive training on HIV and Aids awareness, and called on stakeholders to make good use of the facilities.

Minister of Transport and Aviation Vandy Chidi Minah said the lorry park will help to decongest Freetown and he commended the Germany’s deepest interest in post conflict reconciliation and development.

Chairman Western Rural District Council Alhassan Cole first modern lorry park in the area employment and enhancement of the livelihood of the people, community center boats and drying floor.

Officially commissioning the lorry park the Minister of Finance and Economic Development Dr. Samura Kamara commended and expressed gratitude to the German Government for the continued support over fifty years to the tune of over two hundred million Euros.

He said the Agenda for Prosperity is now in preparation with the aims to strengthen bilateral and technical corporation of German government will be needed in that direction.

He lauded the German Government and their people for supporting the socio economic empowerment of post conflict Sierra Leone and called on the beneficiaries to make good use of the facilities.

Member of Parliament Hon Claude Kamanda appealed to the German Government for their consideration of empowering the youths of Western Rural towards development.

The handing over ceremony was witnessed by German Ambassador and GIZ officials, government officials, heads of the Local councils, cross-section of motor drivers and local stakeholders, a conducted tour of the facilities formed a high point of the ceremony.
