Center for the Advantage of Sierra Leone Youth cautions CSO’s

Executive President of Center for the Advantage of Sierra Leone Youths (CASLY), Alphonso Manley, called on civil society organizations in Sierra Leone yesterday to be neutral in the  17th November 2012 multi-elections.

According to CASLY president, there have been several national reports released recently claiming that some Civil Society Organizations (CSO) are now taking political sides, contrary to what they were registered to do.

Speaking at a training ceremony organized by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), Alphonso Manley made specific reference to the Sierra Leone Police Public release regarding the Bumbuna shooting incident in which  a civil society activist is alleged to have taken political sides prior to the SLP’s investigations. CASLY commended the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone to make public the hearing on the Bumbuna incident.

The executive president of CASLY disclosed that his organization has completed non-violence sensitization activities in both the western urban and western rural starting from Godrich to Waterloo.

Alphonso Manley further advised youths in Sierra Leone to stop hanging their NEC voter’s identification cards on their chests as such acts have the propensity to pose problems to NEC as some youth have already started losing their I.D cards due to negligence.

“The voters I.D cards are not only designed for the 2012 elections but also for other subsequent elections to come,” said Alphonso.

He went on to praise ex-combatants at Waterloo, cross section of ghetto youths and bike riders all of whom responded well during the non-violence sensitization activities. One youth organization, White Flag Movement (WFM) called on politicians not to encourage the youths to use their voter ID cards to extort money.

Finally, CASLY president called on the ruling All Peoples Congress Party (APC), to advise one of their aspirants at Wilberforce, Baby Cole, to refrain completely from making statements that are full of tribal sentiments, as such will lead to chaos within the area and subsequently to the country at large.
