Oversight Committee on Agriculture ends four-day visit

Bo, July 25 (SLENA): In order to complement the President‘s agenda on food security and food self sufficiency, the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Agriculture and Food Security has ended a four day visit to the south and eastern part of the country in order to monitor and assess the  achievements and challenges faced by the agricultural research  units in those regions.  (Photo: Chairman, Hon. The committee’s first stop was at the Magbosi agricultural project under the Sierra Leone Agriculture Research Institute (SLARI) during which the committee found out that research activities in that unit were not functioning due to lack of proper management including the recent transfer of expert staff members.

The committee further observed that the unit is responsible for land, water and the environment but to the surprise of the MPs, nothing was being done in the development of agriculture in that particular unit.

From there the committee visited SLARI projects at the Njala University College in the Moyamba district where the Director of that project unit, Dr. Sahr Fomba and his team of experts briefed the committee on their roles and responsibilities in promoting agricultural research in the country.

However, after a conducted tour of various projects sites in the Njala environ, the committee was very impressed about the activities undertaking by the research unit there.

While addressing the staff, Committee Chairman, Hon. Ibrahim Sorie assured staff of the unit of their continued support to SLARI in order to provide food sufficiency for the country.

At the Bo Agricultural center, the committee interacted with all the units under the Agric ministry during which the District Agricultural Director, Mr. Alusine Bah briefed the committee on the operations and challenges of the agricultural sector in that part of the country.
