Keeping an Eye on NEC Boss Salary

Frankly speaking salary disbursement is a very serious issue in crippling countries like the case of Mama Salone. It has been offering two-sided roars among the masses. In one direction, there are those who always cry of being under paid; receiving sums that are not in any way commensurable to the service rendered. This is almost a national anthem in government parastatal, toilets, kitchens, you name the rest. On the other hand, an impressive number always eye the monthly remuneration of certain personalities as being too exorbitant and a deliberate ploy to established and maintain extravagant and coquettish life style at the detriment of the masses.

This rigmarole around the salary of Dr. Christiana Thorpe (in photo), the National Electoral Commission boss is fuelling suspicion especially at the moment and time the increment came. This matter has further ignited requests from various quarters especially on the side of the University Lecturers who equally believe they are rendering an invaluable service to the nation. Instead, they keep receiving crumbs from bulky salary such as that of our Chief Commissioner of NEC. Political reservations by the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party have been condemned especially by the All People’s Congress Party.

Politics itself is posing a serious threat to our national cohesion. The opposition parties are only playing the role expected of them as exemplified by John Oponjo Benjamin who made it succinctly clear that he has no bone to pick with the personality in question, but he is not equally comfortable with the time at which the uplift-ment occur –few months to elections. The incumbent see the whole criticism as a mere political propaganda.

In the history of this country, Christian Thorpe is the very first personality to serve NEC for the second time in a row. As if that is insufficient, her salary keeps chasing the sky when we have elections just behind our doors. These calls for an alarm, take politics and loyalty to political parties out of this completely. It is a national matter that conveniently befits a national debate; Sierra Leone needs development more than she needs us. We cannot possibly establish and sustained a flowering unionism with her without money, where is this entire sum coming from now that we cry more than ever?

Our ex-combatants are demanding for their benefits. Sadly, according to the Minster of Defense, the government will have to seek funding before attending to their cries. Yet we all hear that one individual (excluding all subordinating commissioners) is receiving a bulky and wholesome amount of Le 30 Million only for one month. Do we expect the masses and oppositions parties to close lips?

If the government could offer such to one individual on a monthly basis, we at Sierra Express strongly believed they would afford meeting the demands of ex-combatants, lectures and other important servers of this nation without delay.
